薄雾笼罩的校园在晨曦中徐徐拉开帷幕,一群悦动的身影,突然出现在校园的各个角落打破了宁静。原来是初中部的同学们收到了期盼已久的来自美国普纳荷学校的来信,大家都迫不及待地想要看看自己的神秘“笔友”是什么样子,远方的朋友都写了些什么。
宋庆龄学校与美国普纳荷学校的友好交流已经近10年,两校的渊源则更可以追溯到一个世纪前,我们敬爱的孙中山先生曾经就读于普纳荷学校。往年两校师生都会进行互访,这也成为孩子们最大的期盼。每年10月都是两校学生友好交流的开端,2020年受疫情影响同学们不能面对面交流,但万水千山隔不断的是朋友之间的友谊与思念。同声相应,同气相求,两校学生不约而同地想到要通过书信,这种更加有温度的方式交流。由于国际信件邮寄目前还受影响,所以同学们决定将电子邮件打印出来,郑重地装入信封,最大程度地还原书信交流的仪式感。

所有来信都是随机分配,所以在开启信封前,同学们也不知道自己的朋友是谁,大家三三两两地聚在一起兴奋地讨论着,“你的朋友是男生还是女生?”“你的朋友都有什么爱好?”
科技的进步缩短了时空的距离,手写书信的传统也悄然而逝,孩子们早已经习惯了通过社交网络交流,但通过这次笔友活动,中美两国的孩子们却都对书信的交流方式表现出极大热情。
“比起直接用微信交流更喜欢写信的方式,大家年龄相仿,兴趣爱好相似,虽然没有见过面,却有一种见字如面的感觉。而且,因为要落实到笔端,写信前会更加认真思考如何给美国的小伙伴介绍自己的国家,自己的学校。”

“我更喜欢亲手写信的感觉,情感是可以通过字体传递出来的,相信美国的小伙伴也能通过笔迹感受到我写信时的心情,之后我要亲笔写信还要贴上自己的照片。”

来信中普纳荷的小伙伴向宋校的朋友详细介绍了自己的学校、家庭、兴趣爱好,同时也非常想要了解中国朋友的生活,想要了解更多中国文化。在两校的交往中,宋校的学生也一直担任着传播中华文化的使者,让世界更加了解中国。

七(1)班陈飞云同学写了满满两页信纸,除了向笔友Zara介绍了宋校校园,自己的兴趣爱好,还特别用中文介绍了上海的美食美景,帮助Zara学习中文,加深对中国的了解。
席卷全球的新冠疫情不仅改变了这次的交流方式,也让孩子们深刻感受到人类是一个命运共同体。普纳荷学生lo K.在来信中提到由于疫情自己一直戴口罩保持社交距离,宋校学生刘寅楷在回信中也提到由于疫情有一段时间自己不能返校,但也有了更多的时间帮助妈妈做家务,学习自己喜欢的科目。虽然文化背景与生活习惯不同,但差异隔不断友谊,孩子们总有聊不完的话题,从兴趣爱好到中国抗疫成功、环境保护、美国大选等等全球问题。
一封信自打开始想要去写,一股温暖的感觉便已然溢满心胸,随着心中的话语、情感,逐一表达落于纸面,对方的形象便栩栩如生活跃于眼前。写信时的真切,拆信时的激动,读信时的欣喜,书信一来一往间,不仅两校深厚的情谊在孩子们心中不断扎根、延续,中美文化也在理解与包容中不断交融碰撞。

一张小小信笺成为连接中美友谊的桥梁,正如宋庆龄先生所说的“我们已发现了一座桥梁,可以沟通环境、种族、宗教和政党方面的分歧。这座桥梁就是儿童——我们的儿童。”愿在明年的金秋时节,当新朋友变成老朋友,孩子们可以通过这座桥梁,跨越大洋彼岸,再次相拥重逢。
Friendship across the Ocean
It was an ordinary morning in SCLS campus. Students of DDMS received letters from their pen friends of Punahou School, Hawaii, USA. They couldn’t wait to see what their friends afar wrote.
Punahou School has been SCLS’s sister school for almost 10 years. The two schools’ connection goes back to late 19th century when Dr. Sun Yat-sen attended Punahou School. Students of both schools used to visit each other as part of exchange programs. But this year, they couldn’t make the visit due to the epidemic. So they decided to write letters to each other. Because of the current restrictions on international mail delivery, they sent E-mails instead of traditional letters.
The E-mails were printed out, put into envelopes and distributed to students by SCLS teachers. Before the letters opened, the students had no idea who their pen friend is. They opened the envelope curiously, read the words, and discussed excitedly about their friend’s gender, hobby, etc. It’s so cool and exciting.
Nowadays, in place of handwritten letter, SNS has become the most common way to communicate with people. However we found the students from both countries developed great passion for traditional letter writing in this way.
‘I prefer to write a letter to my friend rather than talk on Wechat. We are at the same age and like-mined. By reading my friend’s words I feel that we’ve already met and known each other. I will be more serious about how to describe my country and school to my USA friend when writing with a pen.’

‘I prefer writing on paper, because I believe feelings can be well expressed through handwriting. Next time I will continue writing on paper and attach my photo with it.’

In the letters, students of Punahou School introduced their school, family and hobbies in detail and asked our students lots of things about Chinese life and culture. SCLS students have been messengers of Chinese cultures over the past years. They shared our culture and helped the USA students know more about China.
Chen Feiyun wrote two full pages to her pen friend Zara. She introduced herself and SCLS. She also wrote down some names of Shanghai’s gourmet food in Chinese in order to help Zara with her Chinese and know more about Shanghai.
This year’s epidemic has not only changed the way of students’ exchange program, but also made our students realize all human beings are a Community of a Shared Future. Lo K., a Punahou School student mentioned he kept wearing masks and staying away from the crowd. In the reply, Liu Yinkai wrote he couldn’t go back to school but he was happy to spend more time helping his mother with housework and studying his favorite subject. Despite the differences of cultural background and lifestyle, the children have shared a lot, from common hobbies to global issues.
Much love and care is included in the letters. When the students write to each other, the friendship between two schools continues and the cultural understanding is strengthened through the young ambassadors of two countries.
As Madam Soong Ching Ling said,‘We’ve already found a bridge that can smooth out differences of races, religions and political parties. This bridge is our children.’ We sincerely hope the students from SCLS and Punahou School could have a reunion in the near future after this hard time.
