M:What do they look like?
W:Well, she’s fairly tall with curly red hair. He’s tall with short blond hair. They look like they’re in their late thirties.
M:Mm, I don’t see anyone like that. What are they wearing? Do you remember?
W:Yeah. He’s wearing a red sweater and blue jeans. She’s wearing a white skirt and a purple sweater.

Text 10
Would you believe that the first outstanding deaf teacher in America was a Frenchman? His name was Laurent Clerc. (20)He, together with Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, founded America’s first school for the deaf.
Laurent Clerc was born in a small village near Lyons, France, on December 26, 1785(18). He was born with hearing, but when he was one year old, he fell into a fire. (17)As a result, he lost both his hearing and his sense of smell and the right side of his face was badly burned.
(18)At the age of 12, Laurent entered the Royal Institution(学院;研究所) for the Deaf in Paris where he excelled(优于,擅长) in his studies. Therefore, at his graduation, the school asked him to stay on as an assistant teacher. Later, he was promoted to teach the highest class.
Meanwhile, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was upset about the lack of educational opportunities for the deaf in America. Therefore, in 1815, he sailed to London to seek ideas on how to teach deaf people. There, he met a French educator of the deaf who invited him to go to Paris to spend three months learning at the Royal Institution for the Deaf where he met Clerc(19). The two worked and studied well together. When Gallaudet was returning to America, he asked Clerc to come with him. Clerc accepted this.
