S: Hey, Ran, where have you been? What took you so long?
R: Sorry. I was downstairs taking a nucleic acid test. There were too many people in line, so I ran a little late.
S: I see. The lines at nucleic acid testing sites are indeed unpredictable. So knowing how crowded the testing site is before arriving there would be very helpful. Recently, I heard that at one of the universities in Shanghai, students are sharing a digital map that's available on smartphones. The map shows information about the testing sites by just clicking on the map, including opening hours, contact numbers and addresses. It really helps save residents' time spent on tests, and to make effective use of medical resources.
R: Technology is helping with COVID-19 prevention and control. And apart from having nucleic acid tests, Chinese residents can now conduct COVID-19 testing at home with antigen test kits. It only takes 15-20 minutes to get a result, which makes early-phase detection of the virus much easier.
In Guangdong province, a new corona-virus antigen detection information system called the "Guangdong Antigen" has been launched this month by the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission. After taking antigen self-tests at home, residents can report their testing results through the WeChat applet to help keep the local prevention and control system posted of the situation. Those who have had positive results should also upload a picture of the testing kits and wait for directions for the next step.
S: And in addition to testing, food supply is another major concern for the public, especially those asked to stay at home. To ensure food supply for its citizens, Guangzhou has launched a 10-yuan food package, which includes not only materials for main dishes, but also seasoning ingredients such as onion and ginger. The selection of ingredients is designed to meet the local cooking habits, therefore gaining great popularity among the residents.
R: That's so considerate! But I have a question, how is the food safely delivered when people have to stay at home?
S: Well, technology helps with that too. Dozens of JD Logistics unmanned distribution vehicles have been dispatched to Baiyun District in Guangzhou, providing contactless delivery services. Each unmanned distribution vehicle can deliver 100 to 150 packages every day and ensure round-the-clock operation. They can also take optimal routes and avoid obstacles as well as pedestrians and cyclists. When the vehicle arrives at residential buildings, the system will send a message to the recipient, informing them to pick up their parcels.
R: That's so impressive! In fact, high-tech firms are bringing technology to all aspects of our lives amid the fight against the pandemic. SenseTime, the biggest listed AI firm in China, has developed an AI-powered multi-function device. Its "six-in-one" functions cover temperature measurement, facial recognition even while wearing masks, identity authentication, health code verification, vaccination inquiries, and electronic license inquiries. Through one-time authentication, the system can achieve rapid verification and fast access for passengers and visitors at venues like hospitals and metro stations.
Moreover, the application can deal with "digital divide" challenges to support aged people and solve the problems of manual methods of inefficiency or lack of mobile communications networks.
S: The pandemic triggers rapid and large-scale responses, such as a reliance on healthcare. More enterprising endeavours are aimed at building an indigenous healthcare service system or empowering the existing medical system through technologies. Last year alone saw Ali-Health invest in six medical startups. Gaming and social media giant Tencent had made more than 40 investments in the healthcare sector as of early this year.
According to a report by consultancy firm Deloitte, China stands out among the emerging markets in investing in health tech, with a total investment of $7 billion in 2020. Also, more Chinese investors are investing in overseas markets.
R: And of course, China is not the only country using technology to fight the pandemic. Many countries around the world have applied edge science and advanced technology to help with disease monitoring. Take Singapore as an example. The country has rolled out mobile apps to alert individuals when an infected person was present in their immediate vicinity.
And in the UK, an app recording proximity events between app users make it possible for people to be notified instantly when their recent contacts test positive for COVID-19. A study published on Nature shows that a large number of cases were averted by the app.
S: While technology plays a big part in our fight against the COVID-19, we shall not forget that it is people around us who support us through the hard time. Medical workers, community supporters, and of course, the technicians, are working day and night to keep us safe in the face of the pandemic. Thanks to all of them, we’ve got amazing news to share: Guangzhou announced that it has officially cleared all medium-risk areas this morning, and the whole province is low-risk now.

“核酸检测排队时间长?数字化服务来帮忙。”科技在让疫情防控更精准有效的同时,也会让抗疫更具备人文关怀的温度。
在上海财经大学,教师和学生们共享使用着一份手机上的数字地图。该地图显示了该市大约 200 个核酸检测站点的信息。只要单击地图上任何一个测试站点,用户就会收到有关站点的信息,包括开放时间、联系电话和地址。随后,系统会自动打开用户手机上的导航应用程序并显示路线。
除了核酸检测,居民还可以选自己进行新冠病毒抗原检测。抗原检测方便快捷,一般15-20分钟即可出结果,有利于早发现。而在广东,由广东省卫生健康委建设的新冠病毒抗原检测信息系统“粤抗原”小程序正式上线。据悉,该小程序与粤健通、粤核酸小程序、电子健康码等进行连接,用于支持居民开展个人自测和的受检人信息采集和检测结果上报,形成抗原采集、检测、报告到核酸检测的闭环管理。当抗原检测阳性,用户可上传检测卡照片,提交检测结果,等待新冠肺炎疫情防控人员的下一步指引。
点击数字地图,核酸检测地点、开放时间一键查询;使用共享文档,了解社区防控最新情况;打开粤抗原小程序,信息上报一步到位……许多数字应用正在社区抗疫中被广泛使用。
除了习以为常的核酸检测,疫情之下,市民最关心的事便是日常的柴米油盐的采购。
在广州,广州市供销总社参与兜底保障白云区云城等管控区域生活物资供应,推出了10元的食材包。其中,有主打菜和葱、姜等配料,选材符合本地做菜习惯,受到了街坊们的欢迎。此外,市供销总社除了在管控区域定点摆卖物资外,还积极为管控区内的社区超市、农贸店、生活小店提供配送服务,保障管控区物资稳定。
而封控之下,各类物资运力十分紧张,如何在降低人际接触传播风险的前提下,完成社区物资“最后一公里”配送,保障居民日常生活,成为一大难题。近日,多台京东智能无人快递车日前深入疫情管控区域一线,为白云区云城街道提供无接触物资配送和寄递服务。此次投用的5G智能快递车通过网络实时传输信息,保障无人驾驶智能快递车畅行无阻。配合先进的视觉算法高清地图,智能快递车能够实现自动避开障碍的高级别全自动驾驶。每台车每天可配送100-150件快递,可实现全天候运营,释放人力、确保安全、提升效率。它通过移动空间打破地理限制,无接触配送把物资送到居民手中,极大地减轻了工作人员的压力,方便了居民的生活。
高科技企业也纷纷加入这场无声的战役。中国最大的人工智能上市公司商汤科技研发防疫“六合一”便捷通行系统,集成了佩戴口罩识别+人体测温+验健康码+疫苗接种信息+核酸查询+电子证照六大功能。通过一次认证,实现多接口快速验证、快速通行的效果,解决“数字鸿沟”群体的适用,及传统人工方式低效、不便利、字迹潦草或无记录等问题。
除AI技术外,多家企业投身医疗保健。仅去年一年,阿里巴巴就投资了六家医疗初创公司。截至今年年初,游戏和社交媒体巨头腾讯已在医疗行业进行了40多笔投资。据德勤咨询公司报告显示,中国在新兴市场中脱颖而出,2020年在医疗技术领域的投资达到70亿美元,同时有更多中国投资者赴美投资。
放眼全球,科技是全人类共同的财富,在抗疫中发挥着不可替代的作用。例如,新加坡推出了移动应用程序,当一个感染者出现在其附近时,就会给周围的人发出防疫信号。英国国家医疗服务体系(NHS)设计的一款应用程序,则能记录用户之间的关联事件,一旦有相关联的用户检测呈阳性,便会通知其最近的联系人。Nature上发布的一项研究显示,这一应用程序帮助英国避免了大量病例。
