焉耆马在历史上素以彪悍耐跑闻名天下，故有“焉耆骏马到，捷报万里传”一说。
焉耆马主要由丰富放牧经验的蒙古族牧民长期饲养，有关专家认为焉耆马可能是以蒙古马为基础，与中亚马杂交，在当地优良自然条件下，逐渐驯化而成。（马辉星）
