1949年8月21日，兰州决战正式打响。26日凌晨，人民解放军攻占兰州西关，抢占黄河铁桥，截断守军退路，并与城内守军展开激烈巷战，其他各军也相继攻入城区。上午12时，城区守军被全部肃清，兰州解放。
兰州战役是中国人民解放军第一野战军与国民党军在甘肃省会兰州进行的战役，是第一野战军于1949年进行的一次规模最大的城市攻坚战，也是解放战争中解放大西北中最关键、最激烈的一次决战。
