国家卫生健康委等8部门2019年发文明确，有条件的二级及以上综合性医院要开设老年医学科。近年来，多地加快建设这一学科。
按照国家卫生健康委发布的《老年医学科建设与管理指南（试行）》，老年医学科主要收治患老年综合征、共病以及其他急、慢性疾病的老年患者。
