12月11日，国际足联宣布，葡萄牙、西班牙和摩洛哥将联合举办2030世界杯，这将是葡萄牙首次举办世界杯。
2009年1月，葡萄牙曾和西班牙足协在里斯本正式签署文件，决定联合申办2018年世界杯。2010年11月12月2日，2018年世界杯主办权投票仪式在瑞士苏黎世会展中心举行。
最终，俄罗斯以第一轮9票、第二轮13票的成绩击败葡萄牙和西班牙(第一轮7票，第二轮7票)成为2018年世界杯主办国。
随着国际足联宣布葡萄牙、西班牙和摩洛哥将联合举办2030世界杯，这一届赛事将会是葡萄牙首次举办世界杯。
