当地时间12月17日，瓦努阿图群岛发生7.2级地震。总台报道员表示，强震发生后，他曾试图联络住在首都维拉港的当地华人，但当地通信困难。报道员所在的瓦努阿图桑托岛也有明显震感。（总台报道员 赵欣 总台记者 王聪）
