Q1
What is the goal of the English curriculum at Harrow Shanghai?
Harrow Shanghai's English programme fosters excellence by emphasising critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and a love of reading. The curriculum is robust, creative, and ambitious, challenging learners at every stage of school.
Q2
How does studying A Level English Literature support and enhance learning in other subjects?
English Literature is a fantastic choice for any pupil at A Level, as a subject it draws on many skills connected to their Sixth Form learning experience, developing the ability to read for meaning, explore characters, themes and narratives whilst learning more about contextual landscapes and applying wider academic perspectives from the critical world. If a pupil chooses English at A Level, they also metaphorically choose History, Geography, Politics, Economics and so many more as our lessons encapsulate all these disciplines.
A Year 12 English Literature lesson exploring the famous play ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ will explore the playwright Tennessee Williams’ development of character, plotline and themes, but pupils will also debate life in 1950s America, what shapes and informs the political landscape, how societal expectations and norms are challenged and adhered to and how the experience of a character in a play is shaped by said landscape.

Q3
What makes the A Level English Literature course a unique and rewarding experience for students?
A Level English Literature is seminar based, with frequent opportunities for student-led discussion and presentation. Pupils will develop their love and passion for reading, whilst exploring stories that will challenge them, divide opinions and give them space to share their own personal and authentic responses. It is a study of how language and structure shapes meaning, how ideas are created, how a reader responds to a text, what a writer intends to show and how life at the time the story is created hugely impacts the development and reception of the text itself. This is done through constant discussion, debate, discussion and debate. Pupils will hone their essay writing skills in a way that stretches their capabilities from GCSE. They learn to become academic writers, critics of their own and others’ writing and experts in the field of their studied texts. The course is rigorous, with high standards of expectation for wider reading, essays and research but our students thrive and have an insatiable appetite for more, which the English Faculty are more than happy to deliver!
