书之容颜或让予的美学

书是可读之物，书自身也是凝结时间与形态之物，当绘画回到物的材质自身，书本就获得另一种容颜与存在样式。郁涛最近十多年的创作，就是重新让我们面对“书的肖像”或其“本来面目”，发现其另一种自然的面貌。

这些作品确实来自于具体的书本，都是有着历史与名目的出版物，但郁涛通过自己独特的裁切方式，以自己发明的一系列独特观念带动下的技术手法，通过残卷的掩埋、日晒与上色的复杂处理过程，促使书本物性的能量发生质变，把书本还原到“自然”的深度空间，“让”自然来为，“让”自然的时间季节与地质土壤，“让”自然的元素性，彻底渗透书本，改变其形态，从而赋予从未有过的新样貌。

艺术家要重新发现物的物性，使之从日常的功用与人力的作用中解放出来，把人为的物性与自然的自然性重新相关，这既是因为人造物其实都有着自然的质料来源，也是因为我们的知识已经被AI取代与累积后，我们必须改变我们的阅读目光与感知方式，既不卷入知识的社会控制，也不卷入AI的计算诱导，而是回到人性手感与自然生物的原初关系，看似书本已经面目全非，但书本的魂魄却熠熠生辉。

为什么这些吸取大地灵气的书本，以残骸与碎屑的剩余状态呈现出来的“现成品绘画”，如此凝聚我们的目光？这是自然自身染就的色彩，大地赋予的质地触感，让剩余物的时间获得了末世一般的不朽面容。这与艺术家对于古玩文物的热爱，对于佛像的持久冥想，对于楚文化魂魄的墓葬转渡，对于修仙术等等超自然灵性的关注都隐秘相关。

这些残碎之物带有经典绘画的结构却又自我消解了平面的构架，向着“物”的魂魄还原，那古老的招魂术似乎重新被激活，整个如同泥塑一般的沉重物件弥漫着灵动的呼吸，画面的碎纸屑隐约还在呼吸，物的脆弱性与凝定的威严，凝结着文化的记忆与心魂的感触，而获得了从未有过的幽微闪烁与斑驳色晕。

The Face of Books or the Aesthetics of Surrender

Books are objects to be read, yet they are also vessels that condense time and form. When painting returns to the material essence of objects, books acquire a new visage and mode of existence. Over the past decade, Yu Tao’s work has compelled us to confront the "portraits of books" or their "original state," unveiling an alternative, organic manifestation of their nature.

These works originate from tangible books—historical and culturally significant publications. Yet through his singular methods of dissection, burial, sun-drying, and pigment application, Yu Tao employs self-conceived conceptual techniques to catalyze a metamorphosis in the material energy of books. He returns them to the depths of a "natural" spatial realm, surrendering agency to nature itself—surrendering to the rhythms of seasons, the touch of geological soil, and the elemental forces of nature. These forces permeate the books, reshaping their forms and bestowing upon them entirely unprecedented appearances.

The artist seeks to rediscover the inherent materiality of objects, liberating them from utilitarian functions and human manipulation. By reconnecting the artificial with the natural—acknowledging that human-made objects stem from natural origins—Yu Tao responds to an era where knowledge is increasingly supplanted and stockpiled by AI. His work urges us to recalibrate our gaze: neither yielding to the social control of knowledge nor the algorithmic allure of AI, but returning to the primal interplay between human touch and natural vitality. Though the books may seem disfigured, their essence radiates with newfound brilliance.

Why do these "readymade paintings"—books imbued with the earth’s spirit, presented as fragments and residues—captivate us so intensely? It is the hues born of nature’s own palette, the textures gifted by the soil, that transform the remnants of time into an immortal, almost apocalyptic visage. This resonates with the artist’s devotion to antiquities, his meditative engagement with Buddhist statuary, his fascination with the funerary transitions of Chu culture’s spiritual legacy, and his contemplation of Daoist transcendence and supernatural mysticism.

These shattered forms retain the structure of classical painting yet dissolve their own planar frameworks, reverting to the "soul" of the object. Ancient rituals of summoning spirits seem reawakened: clay-like masses pulse with ethereal breath, paper fragments whisper with latent vitality. Within the fragility and solemnity of these objects lies a crystallization of cultural memory and emotional resonance, culminating in a haunting interplay of flickering luminescence and mottled hues—unprecedented in its subtlety and depth.
