Le Figaro is a French daily newspaper founded in 1826 and published in Paris. It is the oldest and second-largest national newspaper in France after Aujourd'hui en Franceand before Le Monde, with a circulation of 320,003 in 2008. The newspaper was named after the hero in Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), a masterpiece of the French playwriter Beaumarcha. Its editorial line is center-right and has generally been supportive of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). Le Figaro is owned by Socpresse, also known as Groupe Le Figaro, which operates in France and Belguim over 70 kinds of French media including newspapers, magazines, web sites and television channels. Headquartered in Paris, the company’s current chairman is Serge Dassault.
